Better Late Than Never

Congratulations to Apple; as much as I geekily respect the shiny nature of their produce, the time it has taken them to allow TV content to be downloaded on iTunes UK now seems longer than the average Kevin Costner movie.
Where to go now?

Mark Cuban has commented that the internet has stopped evolving and that the platform has little room left for innovation until the connections into our home are able to achieve far more bandwidth. One of the ideas that has always kicked around in my over active imagination has been the choice to view cinema releases at home. I think a window of exclusivity of anywhere from two weeks to a month would enable the cinema chains to still achieve revenue, but then again why are we loyal to these inept and soulless multiplex monsters, gone are the days of getting into Rocky IV on my hands and knees between the legs of the usher after queing for 2 hours at my local one screener. After that we should be able to stream the latest and greatest straight to our own high def heaven, without the rage inducing noise of one hundered or so chavs texting and struggling to understand Scary Movie XI.

There seems to be two distinct areas of the internet developing, social media and application led projects. I personally believe the long term future lies in solutions that draw on the core of the internet and provide a platform for innovation, whilst there is a definite desire for social asthetic sites that face the consumer, this market is in danger of eating itself. As the search market becomes the Google Universe – which application out there will be the next to define itself globally.

The video clip is from a Russian news programme. There was an incident at a coal mine and workers were accused of drinking on the job. The interviewer is trying to see if there is any truth in the rumour, and then one of the other workers turns up unannounced. You won’t need sound unless ofcourse, you can speak Russian….. The guy’s face is legendary!

Now my in depth knowledge of this space realistically extends to listening with some irritation to Henk Potts in the morning, however I would appreciate some feedback on people’s thoughts on the vicious volativity of the market at the moment. What does the rapid fluctuations on all exchanges actually mean to the VC and Pre-Ipo community and do people feel a dark cloud hovering or will the continuing influx of new companies power us through.

VMWare hits it over the fence…
August 15, 2007
At this post, VMWare is trading at $55 per share, well above its open price at $29.
EMC bought VMware (VMW) in 2004 for $625M and there was some criticism that EMC had overpaid, reports Barrons. That criticism seems slightly unfounded based on EMC’s 85.6% stake is now worth in the vicinity of $16B!!!
Jefferies & Co. launched coverage this morning with a Buy rating and $42 price target which the company blew past. According to numerous analysts the company’s virtualization software is the first new layer of IT infrastructure in more than 10 years and says the company has a 5-year lead in helping IT improve server ROI. Holding down more than 90% of the virtualization market, VMWare is said to be on a trajectory that mirrors Microsoft Oracle and Veritas in the early days!
The guy in EMC who told them that VMWare would be a good aquisition deserves a pat on the back…
